The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively and individually make a real difference.

The role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative postdoctoral researcher to join a 3-year STFC-funded project exploring one of the central questions in astrophysics: what is dark matter made of? The project, Stellar streams as seismometers for dark matter subhaloes, is led by Dr Denis Erkal alongside Dr Eugene Vasiliev.

During this project, data from Gaia, LSST, WEAVE, 4MOST, and S5 will provide the richest dataset to date for studying perturbations to stellar streams. The successful candidate will work on multiple facets of this problem. First, they will explore how perturbations to streams develop from a variety of baryonic effects. This catalogue of perturbed streams will be used to test how well subhaloes can be inferred, and which streams in the Milky Way are the cleanest detectors. Second, working with collaborators to exploit upcoming datasets, we will identify the most promising streams with perturbation signatures and fit these. For these fits, we will explore the speed up from using GPUs as well as machine learning techniques, e.g. simulation-based inference. Finally, we will use similar techniques to make a statistical inference of the population of subhaloes by reproducing the stream's statistical properties.

The role will involve:

building a census of simulated streams with a variety of perturbations;

comparing CPU and GPU codes for generating and perturbing streams;

using likelihood-based and simulation-based inference techniques for exploring subhalo properties;

measuring the properties of subhaloes in the Milky Way;

publishing results in leading journals and presenting the work at national and international meetings;

contributing to the S5, LSST, WEAVE, and 4MOST collaborations where appropriate;

contributing to the wider research culture of the Astrophysics Research Group at Surrey.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own research ideas within the broad themes of the project and to build an independent research profile.

This is a fixed-term, full-time position until 30/09/2029, and is planned to start in October 2026.

About you

You will have:

a PhD in astrophysics, physics or a closely related discipline;

experience with research in Galactic Dynamics;

programming experience relevant to scientific research;

the ability to communicate research clearly through written work, presentations and collaboration;

a track record of research outputs appropriate to your career stage;

the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.

We recognise that candidates come from a range of research backgrounds. We are looking for candidates with strong quantitative and computational skills who are excited to develop expertise in stellar streams as part of the project.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted online via the University of Surrey jobs portal. Please include:

a CV, including a list of publications;

a cover letter explaining your interest in the role and how your experience fits the project.

Interviews are expected to take place in early August and will be online.

This post is crucial to the programme being able to build the evidence of the impact of providing training placements for clinical psychologists within the sector.

Until very recently there was limited training opportunities to work in this sector owing to the barriers of supervision and placement expectations. Over the last two year we have piloted a new approach which NHSE have supported. They have provided further financial commitment for to enable us to extend the project and explore how best to evaluate the direct and indirect benefits of the project.

This post would particularly suit those with an aspiration to become a clinical psychologist and will provide an opportunity to work with a team of applied psychologists, homeless sector partners as well as trainees who respect and value one another, are advocates for lived experience, lifelong learning, and who embrace change.

About you

Applicants will typically need to have a master’s degree in Psychology or a relevant field and will be confident in the use of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies as well as how to undertake evaluations. We particularly encourage applications from those who identify as belonging to Black, Asian or other minoritized ethnic groups as these groups are underrepresented both in the programme team and the wider profession of clinical psychology.

What we can offer

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave and childcare assistance. These include SignGPT, a five-year EPSRC Programme Grant with the University of Oxford (Prof Zisserman) and UCL (Profs Cormier and Woll) building tools to translate automatically between spoken language and photo-realistic sign language video in both directions; UMCS, a UK and Japan collaboration developing real-time sign language translation in everyday conversation; and a Google.org-funded project reducing the cost of sign language translation through AI. We are seeking an experienced project manager to act as a single point of contact across this portfolio, ensuring that the operational aspects of these multi-partner, multi-million-pound projects run smoothly.

The applicant should have project management experience, and ideally a professional project management qualification. The post is funded through SignGPT and is offered for 2 years (in the first instance) at 0.5 FTE. However, there is scope for a larger FTE and/or a longer-term contract where appropriate, given the breadth of the group’s activities. The work will involve Deaf people and users of British Sign Language (BSL), and through wider collaborative links, users of other international sign languages. Knowledge of sign language and awareness of Deaf culture would be advantageous, as would a working knowledge of BSL. Deaf candidates with suitable project management experience would be welcome to apply.

The University of Surrey is a global university with a world-class research profile and an enterprising spirit, located in one of the safest counties in England, within 35 minutes of London by train and minutes away from the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Recent investments have seen the opening of a world-class Sports Park and important updates to central facilities.

We can offer a generous remuneration package, which includes relocation assistance where appropriate, an attractive research environment, the latest teaching facilities and access to a variety of staff development opportunities.

Informal enquiries related to the project to Professor Richard Bowden by e-mail: r.bowden@surrey.ac.uk.

Please upload your CV and a covering letter via the University of Surrey Website.
