The Section of Virology is a well-established and successful research unit. We are recognised for our strengths in molecular virology, cellular responses to infection and zoonotic infections, and multidisciplinary and translational research. Our approaches range from advanced imaging, multi-omics, comparative virology and sophisticated cell and organ culture models that we apply to study several viral groups including poxviruses, herpesviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, and coronaviruses. The Section has secured ~£9M in research funding in the last 10 years, >£7.5M of which from extramural sources (BBSRC, MRC, charities). Our research is supported by the School’s recent £2M investment in refurbished virology labs for HG2 and HG3 pathogens. 

The School of Biosciences has additional major strengths in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Immunology, and One Health in collaboration with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. We also have close links with the hub of public governmental institutions in the area, including the Pirbright Institute, APHA, UKHSA and DSTL, which recently catalysed the formation of the BBSRC-funded Wessex One Health Doctoral Training Programme, led from Surrey. 

About you

We are looking for a virologist with a track record of achievement relative to their career stage that will launch and sustain a competitive independent research programme. You should have a research vision that generates research outcomes and secures competitive funding but also complements the current strengths of the Section and generates opportunities for collaborative research within and outside the School. 

In addition to research, the successful candidate will contribute to administrative and teaching activities, primarily within Virology and Infection and Immunity, increasing progressively within an initial protected time.

The role

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available in the team led by Dr Dany Beste at the University of Surrey to work on an exciting up to 2.5-year MRC funded research project focused on fundamental biology of the tuberculosis bacillus. The work is focused on characterising a newly discovered system that regulates metabolic pathways and virulence factors that are essential for Mycobacterium tuberculosis to cause disease. 

As a group we are applying an integrated systems approach of microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, multi-omics and mathematical modelling to understanding the role of metabolic pathways in the virulence and antimicrobial susceptibility of mycobacteria with the overall goal of developing novel anti-TB drugs.

This is a multi-disciplinary collaborative project with the University of California and therefore will involve national and international travel. We would like to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist with a PhD in molecular biology or a related discipline capable of trail-blazing our research. Ideally applicants should have published (or be about to publish) in peer-reviewed journals. 

For us it is critical that the candidate is a team player with good communication skills to fit into our enthusiastic, collegiate, and supportive research team. Our laboratory is located at the beautiful Stag Hill campus of the University of Surrey in the heart of Guildford.

The role

An exciting opportunity for a Lecturer in Ecology in the School of Biosciences (part time, fixed term contract up to August 2027). The post holder is expected to complement our existing strengths in Biological Sciences, Veterinary Biosciences and related programmes and have the potential to collaborate with colleagues, in order to deliver the best possible learning and teaching experience for undergraduate students. The candidate is expected to be responsible for teaching students in the School of Biosciences in the field of Ecology, Conservation and Biodiversity. 

Main responsibilities include (but not limited to):

Teaching delivery and development: Develop teaching methods, materials, technologies and learning environments which enhance the students learning opportunities whilst creating an environment for understanding and enthusiasm amongst students. Develop appropriate criteria for the assessment of programmes of work, practical sessions, fieldwork and examinations in subject specialism, and provide appropriate protocols for excellent feedback to students. Extend transform and apply new knowledge from pedagogic developments to teaching and appropriate external activities as part of an integrated approach to academic practice. Conduct individual or collaborative projects related to discipline or pedagogy. Maintain and develop professional expertise and registration requirements with appropriate professional body under the guidance of a senior colleague.

Student pastoral care:  Develop and use pastoral care skills to support the academic development of students and ensure a good student experience. Act as personal tutor and give first line support before referring students on to appropriate services.

Management and Administration: Take on administrative duties as required, which contribute to the efficient management and administration of the Faculty/Department. Be fully involved with students at all levels of support. Leadership of undergraduate teaching modules.

About you

Post holders are expected to hold a degree, higher degree or appropriate equivalent professional qualification (with an expectation of holding a higher degree for those teaching at post graduate level) in the field of Ecology or closely related.

Post holder to demonstrate:

• Evidence of high level of teaching and presentational skills

• Evidence of administrative/organisational skills

• Evidence of knowledge and understanding of current developments in the relevant discipline or profession.
