The role

We are seeking an outstanding Research  Fellow to help spearhead research to understand the relationship between EEG-defined oscillations  during sleep and excessive sleepiness during the daytime in people living with Parkinson's and to develop and implement neuromodulation approaches to alleviate daytime sleepiness.  

The project is funded by Aligning Science Across Parkinson's and the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and will be conducted at the Surrey Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey. The research is part of a collaborative effort between researchers at the Universities of Surrey, Oxford, Harvard and Zurich.

The successful applicant will, together with other researchers and clinical staff members, be responsible for conducting the clinical research protocol, analyses of EEG and behavioural data, deliver neuromodulation interventions, and prepare publications. 

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Neuroscience or related subject area, have experience  in clinical neuroscience research and have excellent data analysis and programming skills.

The successful applicant will be an active member of the Surrey Sleep Research Centre, and is expected to collaborate closely with researchers at Oxford, Harvard and Zurich.  

 About you

Crucial skills include EEG analysis and programming. Desirable skills are prior experience of working with human participants patients, particularly those with dementia or other cognitive disorders, experience in assessing cognitive function using standardised and experimental tasks, conducting non-invasive brain stimulation and/or EEG recording procedures. However, the role involves substantial training to bring the research fellow to the highest level of competence in those research approaches.

The role

The University of Surrey is a looking to recruit an Autoclave lab technician (part-time post at 0.6FTE which is 21.6 hours per week) within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey.

Under the direction of the Senior Laboratory Technician, you will support operation of high-throughput decontamination and processing of laboratory waste materials as well as occasionally providing support to and working with other laboratory technicians within the school of Biosciences & Medicine.

Key duties include:

• Daily collection of biological waste from teaching and research laboratories
• Daily operation of waste autoclaves and glass washers
• Achieving efficient turnaround times for reusable lab equipment
• Working with the team to ensure a reliable, customer-friendly service

About you

Ideally, you have experience of working in either laboratory environment, food industry, catering, medical or social care and have a good understanding of the Health & Safety aspects of working with contaminated materials. Candidates returning from a career break, or parental leavers are encouraged to apply. Full training will be given on the relevant aspects of lab safety, chemical handling and biosafety involved.

Key to this role is a practical and methodical approach to work, ability to undertake manual handling of materials and an ability to work independently and have good time management skills.

The Section of Virology is a well-established and successful research unit. We are recognised for our strengths in molecular virology, cellular responses to infection and zoonotic infections, and multidisciplinary and translational research. Our approaches range from advanced imaging, multi-omics, comparative virology and sophisticated cell and organ culture models that we apply to study several viral groups including poxviruses, herpesviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, and coronaviruses. The Section has secured ~£9M in research funding in the last 10 years, >£7.5M of which from extramural sources (BBSRC, MRC, charities). Our research is supported by the School’s recent £2M investment in refurbished virology labs for HG2 and HG3 pathogens. 

The School of Biosciences has additional major strengths in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Immunology, and One Health in collaboration with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. We also have close links with the hub of public governmental institutions in the area, including the Pirbright Institute, APHA, UKHSA and DSTL, which recently catalysed the formation of the BBSRC-funded Wessex One Health Doctoral Training Programme, led from Surrey. 

About you

We are looking for a virologist with a track record of achievement relative to their career stage that will launch and sustain a competitive independent research programme. You should have a research vision that generates research outcomes and secures competitive funding but also complements the current strengths of the Section and generates opportunities for collaborative research within and outside the School. 

In addition to research, the successful candidate will contribute to administrative and teaching activities, primarily within Virology and Infection and Immunity, increasing progressively within an initial protected time.
