This is an exciting opportunity for an established or emerging research leader working at the interface of artificial intelligence, data science, multi-source data integration (biomedical but also environmental and socio-economic data) and health, broadly defined across humans, animals and the environment. with the ambition to develop a distinctive programme of internationally recognised, interdisciplinary research. We are particularly interested in researchers whose work can address important challenges in human health, while also creating opportunities to translate methodologies and discoveries across veterinary and animal health within a broader One Health framework.

The successful candidate will join a School with an ambitious vision for the future of AI led research in healthcare. You will be expected to develop a strong PI-led research programme, attract significant external research funding and build collaborations across Surrey and beyond. The role provides considerable scope to develop research in human health providing an important primary focus while exploiting Surrey's distinctive veterinary and One Health environment. The appointed candidate will have the opportunity to work across disciplinary boundaries with researchers in medicine, veterinary medicine, health sciences, computer science, engineering, psychology, biosciences and other areas of the University.

About the role

In the role you will:

• Develop an independent, externally funded, sustainable research programme and to establish themselves as a Principal Investigator, securing competitive research income across relevant UK and international funding landscapes. This will include opportunities to develop research aligned with NIHR priorities, alongside UKRI, Wellcome Trust, medical charities, industry and other major funders
• Employ the unique combination of human, animal and biological data available across Surrey to address major health challenges and generate new knowledge.
• Work collaboratively with other researchers in the School to apply artificial intelligence approaches to their research
• Develop collaborations with NHS organisations, clinical researchers, industry and other external partners, translating methodological innovation into real-world health impact
• Generate high-quality publications and demonstrable impact
• Contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level within the School of Veterinary Medicine, including the development of AI, data science and evidence-based approaches within the curriculum, as well interdisciplinary teaching and research training.
• Inspire students to understand how data, AI and computational approaches are transforming modern healthcare.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level, we would expect evidence of an established research programme, successful and sustained research income generation and a track record of research leadership and collaboration commensurate with career stage.

Please note that these roles will be offered at either Lecturer B or Senior Lecturer level depending on your experience (see job profile below for further details). The salary range for a Lecturer B starts at £48,337 and Senior Lecturer starts at £59,390.

The School of Veterinary Medicine currently holds over £7m in external research support for animal and human microbiome projects. A vibrant and collaborative community of post-doctoral researchers and PhD students are currently working on microbiome projects ranging from in vitro studies of antimicrobial resistance to helminth and parasiticide interactions with the microbiome to early-life microbiome of foals. In-house technologies supported by the University include both Illumina and nanopore sequencing platforms, Luminex-read multiplex immunoassay of cytokines, Biolog metabolic fingerprinting and aerobic/anaerobic culturomics. Data processing and analysis is supported by the University’s Bioinformatics Core Facility. Examples of ongoing projects in the microbiome field can be found at Horse Microbiome Research Group and Anthelmintic Resistance in Southeast Asia (AHR-SEA).

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Microbiome Science to further grow and sustain research in this field at the University of Surrey.

About the role

Within the School of Veterinary Medicine, you will join the Section of Infection and Immunity within the Discipline of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. In the role you will:

· Establish and lead a sustainable research group generating high quality publications and demonstrable impact

· Secure significant research income to support the work of your research group

· Mentor postgraduate research students and postdoctoral fellows

· Initiate cross-disciplinary research collaborations allowing novel, multi-disciplinary insights into animal and human health and disease

· Make high quality, research-led contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the School, including on the RCVS-accredited BVMSci veterinary degree course.

About you

Our Lecturers and Senior Lecturers play an important role in advancing research and innovation and influencing the future of the veterinary profession. As such, you will have:

· An established research profile in the field of microbiome science, including an excellent and continuing publication record in this field, and demonstration of impact

· A proven track record of external research grant income generation

· A proven commitment to delivery of inspiring, engaging learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level

· Enthusiasm and a willingness to work flexibly in different contexts, alongside excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.

· Experience of supervising research students
