The School of Veterinary Medicine currently holds over £7m in external research support for animal and human microbiome projects. A vibrant and collaborative community of post-doctoral researchers and PhD students are currently working on microbiome projects ranging from in vitro studies of antimicrobial resistance to helminth and parasiticide interactions with the microbiome to early-life microbiome of foals. In-house technologies supported by the University include both Illumina and nanopore sequencing platforms, Luminex-read multiplex immunoassay of cytokines, Biolog metabolic fingerprinting and aerobic/anaerobic culturomics. Data processing and analysis is supported by the University’s Bioinformatics Core Facility. Examples of ongoing projects in the microbiome field can be found at Horse Microbiome Research Group and Anthelmintic Resistance in Southeast Asia (AHR-SEA).

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Microbiome Science to further grow and sustain research in this field at the University of Surrey.

About the role

Within the School of Veterinary Medicine, you will join the Section of Infection and Immunity within the Discipline of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. In the role you will:

· Establish and lead a sustainable research group generating high quality publications and demonstrable impact

· Secure significant research income to support the work of your research group

· Mentor postgraduate research students and postdoctoral fellows

· Initiate cross-disciplinary research collaborations allowing novel, multi-disciplinary insights into animal and human health and disease

· Make high quality, research-led contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the School, including on the RCVS-accredited BVMSci veterinary degree course.

About you

Our Lecturers and Senior Lecturers play an important role in advancing research and innovation and influencing the future of the veterinary profession. As such, you will have:

· An established research profile in the field of microbiome science, including an excellent and continuing publication record in this field, and demonstration of impact

· A proven track record of external research grant income generation

· A proven commitment to delivery of inspiring, engaging learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level

· Enthusiasm and a willingness to work flexibly in different contexts, alongside excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.

· Experience of supervising research students

We have a part time position available for a qualified veterinary surgeon who has experience in companion animals to join our School as a Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Practice (LVCP), delivering innovative veterinary education. This is a great opportunity to train and influence the vets of the future and comes with a great benefits package including a generous salary with an additional 10% uplift for MRCVS/FRCVS, 37 days holiday PLUS bank holidays, and an industry leading pension. This is a part time role, working 3 days per week. 

About the role

LVCPs act as clinical and personal tutors to our final year students, supporting their learning and facilitating their transition to new graduates, whilst also supporting practice-based trained preceptors in the delivery of our distributed model of clinical education. 

The distributed model means that you will work to support our students on their rotations at practices across the UK. While students are on placement you will spend a significant amount of time travelling to partner practices to deliver in person support to our students along with time in Guildford to teach students and support examinations. 

About you

This position would suit someone with experience in companion animal practice but additional experience working with other species would be advantageous. We are looking for someone with an intuitive passion for teaching, but prior academic experience is not a prerequisite. We are happy to consider candidates considering a career change into academia. You will have a solid grounding in essential veterinary skills and a pragmatic attitude, able to think on your feet and adapt to the requirements of the role.

Due to the nature of the role and the distribution of our partner network, this post will require a significant amount of travel and as such we will consider applicants based in all locations throughout the country.

The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced veterinary surgeon (MRCVS) with a passion for inspiring undergraduate students in all aspects of small animal practice but especially surgical skills.  This is a part-time position that could suit those wishing to work with students whilst maintaining a clinical role.

The primary focus of the role will involve supervising students at the off-site neutering clinics, in conjunction with other veterinary surgeons and an RVN. The neutering clinics are stand-alone clinics run in conjunction with our partners, and provide invaluable experience for 4th year students, enabling them to enter final year rotations and general practice with confidence in routine surgery. The role will also support clinical teaching across the curriculum, preparing our students for their final year rotations.

The successful candidate should be confident in procedures in elective surgical neutering and have a good knowledge of veterinary anaesthesia in cats and dogs. Candidates will have enthusiasm for sharing their clinical experience and knowledge, giving students the confidence to perform surgical procedures and manage surgical cases. A teaching qualification is not essential but prior experience of teaching veterinary undergraduates would be an advantage. Those with extensive experience of supporting new graduates are also encouraged to apply. 

Enthusiasm and a willingness to work flexibly and to adapt to teaching creatively in a range of different contexts are essential, alongside excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.  

This 0.5FTE post is 2.5 days a week and specifically requires availability on a Tuesday and Wednesday in term time. The other time can be agreed. 

About you

All candidates must hold a veterinary degree and be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS). Candidates will have demonstrable clinical experience and practical competencies in small animal practice.
