The clinical psychology programme team is looking to employ a full time Research Assistant from March 2026 to September 2027 to support the development of our work within the Homeless sector. This post is crucial to the programme being able to build the evidence of the impact of providing training placements for clinical psychologists within the sector.

Until very recently there was limited training opportunities to work in this sector owing to the barriers of supervision and placement expectations. Over the last two year we have piloted a new approach which NHSE have supported. They have provided further financial commitment for to enable us to extend the project and explore how best to evaluate the direct and indirect benefits of the project.

This post would particularly suit those with an aspiration to become a clinical psychologist and will provide an opportunity to work with a team of applied psychologists, homeless sector partners as well as trainees who respect and value one another, are advocates for lived experience, lifelong learning, and who embrace change.

About you

Applicants will typically need to have a master’s degree in Psychology or a relevant field and will be confident in the use of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies as well as how to undertake evaluations. They will have self-assurance in their written and oral communication skills so that they are able to engage in sensitive topics of conversations.

The profession of clinical psychology currently attracts fewer individuals from minority groups into training. These posts will play a central role in helping us to understand how the profession can help address psychological and physical health inequalities in this sector, so we are seeking someone who wishes to contribute to this and be part of a cultural change. We particularly encourage applications from those who identify as belonging to Black, Asian or other minoritized ethnic groups as these groups are underrepresented both in the programme team and the wider profession of clinical psychology.

What we can offer

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave and childcare assistance. A flexible working pattern is possible. We also offer an exclusive discounted membership package to all our staff for the Surrey Sport Park. Additionally, you will benefit from collegiate support, University resources and partnership working with regional colleagues. The campus provides a pleasant working environment with close links to road and rail transport.

The School and Faculty

The clinical psychology programme is based within the School of Psychology, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (FHMS). The faculty is a leading provider of undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare education, research and consultancy. It has extensive links with local health care providers and is based in a modern, purpose built, state-of-the-art teaching facility on the University of Surrey campus in Guildford. Further information about the University and the School of Psychology can be found at https://www.surrey.ac.uk/school-psychology&nbsp.

Further Information

If you would like more general information about the School or this project please contact Mary John, Head of Department of Psychological Interventions via m.john@surrey.ac.uk or Hannah Frith, Associate Professor via h.frith@surrey.ac.uk.

To apply please submit your CV and cover letter via the University website. We reserve the right to close this vacancy early based on the volume and calibre of applications.

The University of Surrey is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all.  We place great value on diversity and are seeking to increase the diversity within our community

You will join an established research group within a highly rated research department, with an excellent computing and software infrastructure for first class research, modern facilities and close links with industry. Surrey’s Institute for People-Centred AI builds on 40 years of work into foundational AI at the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) which is ranked 1st in the UK for Computer Vision and in the top-5 for both Audio-Visual AI and Robotics (CS Rankings, Sept 2024).

The post sits within Professor Bowden’s sign language research group at CVSSP, which leads a portfolio of major collaborative projects developing AI for sign languages. These include SignGPT, a five-year EPSRC Programme Grant with the University of Oxford (Prof Zisserman) and UCL (Profs Cormier and Woll) building tools to translate automatically between spoken language and photo-realistic sign language video in both directions; UMCS, a UK and Japan collaboration developing real-time sign language translation in everyday conversation; and a Google.org-funded project reducing the cost of sign language translation through AI. We are seeking an experienced project manager to act as a single point of contact across this portfolio, ensuring that the operational aspects of these multi-partner, multi-million-pound projects run smoothly.

The applicant should have project management experience, and ideally a professional project management qualification. The post is funded through SignGPT and is offered for 2 years (in the first instance) at 0.5 FTE. However, there is scope for a larger FTE and/or a longer-term contract where appropriate, given the breadth of the group’s activities. The work will involve Deaf people and users of British Sign Language (BSL), and through wider collaborative links, users of other international sign languages. Knowledge of sign language and awareness of Deaf culture would be advantageous, as would a working knowledge of BSL. Deaf candidates with suitable project management experience would be welcome to apply.

The University of Surrey is a global university with a world-class research profile and an enterprising spirit, located in one of the safest counties in England, within 35 minutes of London by train and minutes away from the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
