Applications are invited for a short-term (6 months) post-doctoral research position within the group of musculoskeletal research team led by Dr Giovanna Nalesso at the University of Surrey. The post is funded by a MRC project grant aimed to investigate the role of microRNAs and FZD receptors in the modulation of the Wnt signalling in the articular cartilage and osteoarthritis. A key goal is to determine which microRNAs and specific receptor isoforms are responsible for modulating the activation of different branches of the Wnt signalling in physiology and disease. The final goal is to discover novel therapeutic targets to halt disease progression in osteoarthritis and promote pro-regenerative processes.

The post-holder will join a team of 3 PhD students working on different aspects of cellular signalling modulating tissue homeostasis in the articular cartilage as well as on validating ex vivo models of cartilage repair.

The post would suit a motivated postdoctoral scientist who wishes to develop a career in the musculoskeletal field. Possibilities to extend the contract might come available in due time.

The post-holder should have a PhD in a biomedical field. The successful candidate must have significant experience of working in a research laboratory. Evidence of scientific contribution including publications and presentation at conferences is also essential. Candidates must have excellent oral and written scientific communications skills, commitment to collaboration in research and to taking a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving. Applicants with previous experience of working with articular cartilage/chondrocytes and/or microRNAs as well as candidates skilled in molecular biology techniques (cloning, lenti/adenoviral preparation and expansion) are particularly encouraged to apply.

In addition to your salary you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement and excellent development opportunities. Benefits package includes generous salary package, award-winning pension scheme, on-site nursery  and discounted membership to our world-renown Surrey Sports Park.

The post-holder will be based at the Manor Park campus of the University of Surrey. The The University of Surrey is an ambitious, research-led organization. We are committed to research excellence and to the application of our research for the benefit of society through our enterprising and forward-thinking spirit.

Informal enquiries about the position are welcomed and can be made to Giovanna Nalesso, g.nalesso@surrey.ac.uk
