The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to outstanding teaching and student experience, impactful research and innovation, and the creation of an environment in which students and staff achieve their full potential. Our 16,000 students are at the heart of our university, recognised by our boundary-pushing pedagogy and Top 25 position nationally in terms of overall satisfaction. We place a strong emphasis on practice-based learning and employability, leading the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide to name us University of the Year for Graduate Employment for 2022.

Surrey has a world-class reputation for undertaking research that addresses global challenges, drives innovation, and delivers real-world impact. Research intensity is at the heart of our future strategy, as we enhance excellence¸ build scale, and bring together disciplinary strengths. New pan-university institutes, such as the AI Institute (pioneering the future of trustworthy, responsible and inclusive AI) and the Surrey Institute of Sustainability, serve as flagships of cross-disciplinary research concentration from which to elevate our global impact and visibility. Our excellent innovation ecosystem continues to grow at pace, supported by the award-winning Surrey Research Park, which in turn drives our renewed focus on industrial and government engagement.

Our newly launched three-year strategy sets out a blueprint for becoming a leading global university. To this end, we are seeking to appoint a Provost and Senior Vice-President, who will take the University’s academic performance to the next level and firmly embed our agile, responsive, can-do culture. As the Chief Academic Officer, the Provost reports to President and Vice-Chancellor and supports the translation of the institutional strategy and objectives into operational plans through our three Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellors. The Provost is a member of both the University Executive Board and the University Council. They will also chair Senate, ensuring academic quality and standards, and will work closely with Executive Board colleagues to align professional service delivery in support of the academic mission. The Provost deputises for the President and Vice-Chancellor, and will be expected to lead and represent the University both internally and externally as required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding achievements in teaching and research, with international recognition in their academic field. Alongside a comprehensive understanding of contemporary higher education, they will bring broad-based experience of visible and inclusive senior leadership, as well as effective management of people and resources. A proven track record of assuring and delivering high-quality research performance and an excellent student experience is essential, as is a strong alignment with the University’s ethos and values.

At Surrey, we are very proud of the diversity within our community and are committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equitable opportunities for all. Achieving our strategic vision relies on our proven ability to attract the best people from the UK and internationally to work and study here.
