The School of Literature and Languages is a vibrant and innovative School with an international research and teaching portfolio in English Literature and Creative Writing, Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting Studies, Modern Languages, Film and Intercultural Communication. Creative Writing at Surrey currently sits within the top 10 in both the Complete University Guide and the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020. We are looking for exceptional academics whose ambitions in both research and teaching complement those of our forward-looking School.

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in English Literature (post 1945) to teach on our English Literature and English Literature with Creative Writing programmes with a research specialism in one of two key areas we see as having exciting potential for development at Surrey: digital humanities or environmental humanities. The successful candidate will be required to teach at undergraduate level, primarily in areas related to their specialism, as well as contributing to our two MA programmes in English Literature and Creative Writing, and taking on administrative roles and PhD supervision, as appropriate. The English and Creative Writing team at Surrey is dynamic, inclusive, and innovative, and has strong teaching and research specialisms in areas relating to this post such as critical theory, world literature, nineteenth-century literature and culture, creative writing, innovative writing, cinema studies, modernism and postmodernism.

We are looking for candidates with a completed PhD on literature after 1945 whose research profile demonstrates expertise related to either digital humanities or environmental humanities. The successful candidate will have started to develop a strong publication record, appropriate for their career-stage, have clear research plans for the next 3-5 years, and have the ability to contribute to the School’s broad research and teaching strengths in literary study, including to our impact and public engagement activities. We are seeking someone who recognises the need for new ways of teaching English Literature in the C21st, and is able to engage creatively with the pedagogical use of new technologies.

At Surrey, we are committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equitable opportunities for all, in the pursuit of Surrey’s vision to be a leading global University. We work together to create a truly inclusive culture. We place great value on diversity and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We are seeking to increase the diversity within our community and would particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities. Appointments will always be made on merit.

The anticipated start date for the successful candidate will be February 2022.

To arrange an informal discussion with Professor Bran Nicol, Head of the School of Literature and Languages please e-mail Alison Stubley: a.stubley@surrey.ac.uk.
