The Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) at the University of Surrey seeks to appoint a Reader/Professor to lead a substantial and sustained portfolio of research in the fields of AI, machine learning, computer vision, audio-visual machine perception and/or natural language processing. The new role has been created as part of the University’s focus on AI as a strategic priority.

Ranked first in the UK for computer vision, CVSSP pioneers ground breaking research which benefits society through technological innovations in healthcare, security, entertainment, robotics and communications. The Centre is internationally unique in bringing together expertise in both audio and visual machine perception, with the central goal of creating machines that can see, hear and understand the world around them.

The new post will enable a research leader with an international profile and an excellent track record of published work to lead a significant portfolio of research in their field of AI, complementing the Centre’s existing activities. The postholder will also take an active role in training the AI scientists of the future by leading, developing and delivering teaching activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within the University’s School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering.

In considering applicants, the Centre is open to a broad range of AI-related specialisms and welcomes discussions about existing projects. Applicants must be able to demonstrate an outstanding track record of research and publication at national and international level which has made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge, and a strong track record of leading successful research proposals and securing significant funding.

In return, we offer a dynamic working environment on a leafy campus close to London, with access to world-class leisure facilities nearby. Becoming part of one of Europe’s largest centres for AI and machine learning research, postholders will benefit from the Centre’s extensive machine learning facilities and the University’s supportive infrastructure and interdisciplinary research culture. The role brings a substantial salary and generous relocation package, as well as a variety of academic and professional development opportunities.
