Research Administrative Coordinator (Schwartz South-East)

The Workforce Organisation and Wellbeing (WOW) Research Group in the School of Health Sciences is seeking to appoint three posts on the same project:

  • a Research Officer/Assistant (0.5 WTE)
  • a Research Administrative Coordinator (0.4 WTE)
  • a Project Manager (0.5WTE)

to work on Health Education England Funded Research project to roll-out Schwartz Rounds across the South-East of England to other Higher Education Institutions for their healthcare student populations. The study design is a hub and spoke model with in-built research evaluation for eighteen months fixed term. 

Working with Professors Jill Maben and Cath Taylor at the University of Surrey and supported by colleagues from the Schwartz Steering group, colleagues at the University of Liverpool and the Point  of care Foundation this is an excellent opportunity to work within an experienced national team. 

The project aims to embed Schwartz Rounds for healthcare students in up to seven Higher Education Insititutions in the South East of England, to provide engagement, consultation and ongoing mentoring support and to lead on evaluating the Rounds in the new HEI sites.  The project also aims to continue to run Rounds for students at the University of Surrey (UoS) as well as running Rounds for academic staff and to continue a robust quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the process and impact of the Rounds at the UoS, and extend this protocol to the new sites as they are introduced.

The project is funded by Health Education England to roll-out Schwartz Rounds in Higher Education Institutions for healthcare students across the South East of England. Schwartz Rounds are a group intervention to provide a reflective supportive space for students and staff to process together the social, ethical and emotional challenges of the work they do. Rounds were run face to face before the COVID pandemic but are now run online in zoom. Schwartz Rounds provide healthcare students and academic staff in the School of Health Sciences with a structured (usually monthly) forum to discuss the emotional impact of their work in a safe and confidential environment. Each Round lasts one hour and commences with one or two storytellers sharing their experiences to trigger reflection and resonance in the audience. An open discussion, guided by a trained facilitator, then follows in which audience members are invited to share their reflections triggered by the panellists’ stories. The project manager post will manage the project roll -out outside of the University of Surrey to seven other Universities; the research assistant will lead an evaluation of Schwartz Rounds and the project hub and spoke model; and the research administrative co-ordinator will support other team members with implementation of Schwartz Rounds at the University of Surrey.  The successful candidates will work with the wider research and Schwartz team in the School of Health Sciences to deliver the project in eighteen months.

This is a fixed-term post for up to 18 months starting March 2022. Home working considered.
