Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position starting as soon as possible to develop and configure an environmental detection system required for autonomous driving.

This post is part of a project that focuses on the development and testing of a fully autonomous electric quadricycle – namely the University of Surrey’s ZEBRA (Zero Emission test Bed for Research on Autonomous driving). The outcomes of the project will be evaluated on the ZEBRA through real vehicle tests and the results are to be presented at meetings and conferences.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in engineering, control or software development, and should be a holder of a PhD degree in one of the areas of electronic engineering, automotive engineering, mechanical engineering or control systems engineering. Also, experience in the following areas is highly desirable:

  1. Programming (MATLAB/SIMULINK, Python etc.)
  2. ROS (Robot Operating System)
  3. Rapid prototyping system (e.g., dSPACE)
  4. Vision and Lidar sensors
  5. Vehicle dynamics

The appointee will be responsible for research tasks in accordance with the project, making use of standard research techniques and methods. This may include fieldwork, laboratory experimentation, computer-based data analysis or library research and will entail coordination of work with that of others involved in the project. Write-up of results and contributions to the preparation of journal/conference papers and other outputs (as required) are expected.

The appointee will join the Centre for Automotive Engineering of the Mechanical Engineering Sciences Department, which has research interests in a wide range of topics including active vehicle dynamics, tyre dynamics, electric powertrains, vehicle aerodynamics and novel transmission systems for electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The research group owns a state-of-the-art Hardware-In-the-Loop drivetrain test rig that is unique in the UK.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,866) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,817).
