The University of Surrey is seeking to appoint a Professor/Professor in Practice or Professorial Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), to act as Associate Dean for Education (ADE) for the Faculty. This is a permanent position, with the position of ADE offered for an initial period of three years. The post holder will be employed on a permanent academic contract, towards the end of the three year period a decision will be taken by the Executive Dean of the Faculty to determine whether to extend the tenure as ADE for a further period or for the appointed candidate to revert to being a member of academic staff.

The ADE role is one of the most critical management roles in the Faculty. For FASS, the role covers a large student population (around 50% of the University’s total student population), a complex set of programmes from new degree apprenticeships, Foundation year, UG, PGT and PGR, as well as international dual degree programmes through Surrey International Institute (SII) at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE), China..

This is a very exciting time to join the University transforming the educational agenda. The University is committed in transforming lives through education that is inclusive, research informed, connected to real life, bridges theory and practice and digitally augmented. The successful candidate will support the Faculty in our drive to seek innovative and digital approaches to learning and teaching pedagogic development, including online and blended learning, leading a transformative approach to our programme development in line with the University's education and corporate strategies.

The role will require an understanding of learning and teaching contexts and approaches across the fields of the arts, humanities and social sciences and we therefore welcome applications relevant to any academic area of the Faculty. The successful candidate will be placed in the relevant School once appointed, and will resume a permanent role within that School at the end of their tenure as ADE.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Our Faculty brings together scholars and students from an extraordinary range of academic disciplines in a learning community dedicated to the discovery and enrichment of the arts, humanities and social sciences. We are a group of artists, entrepreneurs and scholars working to investigate the pleasures, and understand the challenges, of our times.

Each year we welcome more than 7,000 bright, dedicated students onto our degree programmes. Our students know that strong ideals must be coupled with excellence in practice. In FASS, we emphasise the value of research alongside our ‘conservatoire’ culture of learning by doing. Our students engage with the theory and history of their discipline while working on real problems, and have the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience through our renowned Professional Training placements.

Our dedication to the student experience is demonstrated by our success in the major league tables.  We are ranked in the top Six UK universities by The Guardian University League Table 2019 for Criminology, Modern Languages and Music.

Our learning community is global. Our staff is as diverse as our student body. We speak dozens of languages and offer each other learning opportunities that draw on our remarkably different backgrounds. Our alumni hold senior positions in industry and academia across the world and we are proud of the contribution they make to society.
