Research Fellow in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of spray coating

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

Are you a computational modeller passionate about tackling environmental challenges? An exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow in in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for Sustainable Spray Coating. Join our EPSRC-funded Prosperity Partnership, SustaPack, to pioneer fluid dynamics models for the world’s first fully recyclable paper bottle. Collaborate with industry leader Pulpex Ltd and translate your skills into real-world sustainability impact.

This is a fixed term contract (upto 30 months)

Why This Project?
Plastic waste is a global crisis. Pulpex Ltd’s paper bottle—made from 100% renewable cellulose—reduces carbon emissions by 30% vs. plastic and degrades naturally. Your work will directly enable this innovation by:

  • Developing multiscale computational models (microscopic to product-scale) to optimise spray coating processes for liquid barrier films.
  • Addressing challenges in droplet dynamics, non-Newtonian fluid behaviour, and thin-film formation to ensure uniform, durable coatings.
  • Validating models against experimental data to accelerate industrial adoption.

Your Role
You’ll leverage advanced computational methods (e.g., CFD, SPH, LBM, or DPD) to:

  • Design models integrating fluid properties, substrate interactions, and process parameters.
  • Collaborate with experimentalists and industry engineers to bridge simulation and real-world application.
  • Publish high-impact research and present findings at international conferences.

About you

We’re Looking For:

  • A PhD in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Experience in computational modelling using CFD, SPH, LBM or DPD.
  • Proficiency in programming/code development for model development/validation.
  • Experience with multiphase flows, spray dynamics, or thin-film modelling (preferred but not essential).
  • A self-motivated problem-solver who thrives in interdisciplinary teams.

Why Surrey?

  • Work with a dynamic research group specialising multiscale modelling and collaboration with Surrey’s Pan-University Institutes of Sustainability and People-Centered AI.
  • Mentorship from Prof. Charley Wu and industry partners for career growth.
  • Flexible work environment with support for conference travel and skill development.

Make Your Research Matter
This isn’t just another modelling project—it’s a chance for you to redefine packaging sustainability. If you’re driven by innovation and want your skill to power real-world environmental solutions, apply now.

How to apply

Please apply with your CV and cover letter on the University website.

For informal enquiry, please email Prof. Charley Wu (c.y.wu@surrey.ac.uk), together with a copy of your CV. More information on the project can be found at https://www.surrey.ac.uk/news/multimillion-pound-research-project-aims-advance-production-next-generation-sustainable-packaging

Surrey values diversity—we strongly encourage applications from underrepresented groups in STEM.
