Campus Safety control room operative

At the University of Surrey, safety isn’t just about alarms and procedures — it’s about people.

As part of our Campus Safety Team, you’ll play a key role in creating a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for our students, staff and visitors. From busy lecture days to quiet nights on campus, your work helps ensure that learning, living and recreation can happen confidently and securely.

We’re looking for someone calm, compassionate and confident — someone who understands that behind every call or incident is a person who may need reassurance, guidance or support.

The Role

Working within our dedicated Control Room, you’ll be the central point for incident coordination across campus. You’ll liaise closely with the Campus Manager, deploy officers when required, and ensure that incidents are managed in a timely, proportionate and professional way.

But this role is about more than monitoring systems — it’s about judgement, communication and care.

You will:

- Act as the central hub for alarms, CCTV and site systems

- Communicate clearly and calmly via phone and radio, identifying key information quickly

- Support and direct Campus Safety Officers to incidents

- Make informed decisions, balancing safety, welfare and proportionality

- Record incidents accurately and ensure compliance with health & safety procedures

- Work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners, including Surrey Police

You’ll deal with a mix of routine matters and more complex situations. Some incidents may involve vulnerable individuals, so empathy, professionalism and a steady approach are essential.

About You

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

- Remain calm under pressure

- Have strong communication skills

- Can prioritise effectively and think clearly in developing situations

- Understand the importance of welfare and safeguarding

- Work well as part of a team

- Are confident using systems and technology

A full, current manual driving licence is essential, along with a willingness to undertake an enhanced DBS check and work within a 24/7 shift rota.

What’s in it for you?

We believe Surrey is a fantastic place to work — vibrant, inclusive and forward-thinking.

Our beautiful, leafy campus offers green spaces, a picturesque lake and a real sense of community. You’ll be part of a university dedicated to life-changing education and research, working in an environment that values collaboration, respect and development.

Alongside this, we offer:

- 19 days annual leave + 7 University days + Bank Holidays

- Generous employer pension contribution

- Travel & family benefits including subsidised rail fares, cycle to work scheme and on-site childcare

- Access to world-class leisure facilities at discounted rates

- On-site parking, cafés and restaurants

- Ongoing training and development opportunities

Most importantly, you’ll join a supportive team where your contribution genuinely matters.

For more information or to be considered for the role, please apply via the University of Surrey Website.

The University is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all. We place great value on diversity and are seeking to increase the diversity within our community. Therefore, we particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.
