Lecturer A in Foundation Year Mathematics

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly successful, national teaching award winning team delivering a high-quality educational experience on our Foundation Year programmes. Established in 2018 in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, we have grown to help an extremely diverse cohort of around 200 students per year to progress onto over 20 different STEM undergraduate programme routes.

This multi-faceted role involves delivering timetabled lectures and group tutorials (typically 14 hours per week) as well as providing individual student support on demand. You will be required to set your own assessments and appropriate preparation materials and guidance for the students. We have a substantial body of mature resources already in place, however you will be expected to review these on an annual basis and make minor modifications in accordance with any updated guidelines.

We pride ourselves in the level of pastoral support that we provide for our students and you will be expected to assume responsibility for a group of tutees. You will also be expected to carry out a variety of administrative duties associated with teaching in a university as well as other tasks as may reasonably be requested by the programme leads. Support for achieving university related teaching qualifications will be provided if necessary.

About you

Ideally a qualified teacher, you must be fully conversant with A-Level Further Mathematics (or an equivalent level.) You will have at least 2 years continuous experience of teaching Further Mathematics and be able to demonstrate a clear commitment to achieving excellence in your teaching practice and in student pastoral support. You need to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances and pragmatic in your approach to dealing with any student related matters that arise.

Being passionate about your subject and seeing students succeed, you will have an encouraging and positive attitude which embraces best practices in EDI. As a team player you will be comfortable working closely with other colleagues on a variety of interesting initiatives related to the continuous enhancement of our programmes. The ability to offer a second STEM subject will be regarded favourably.

What we can offer

In addition to salary, you will receive a yearly incremental pay rise, generous annual leave entitlement of 30 days holiday plus 7 university closure days and 8 bank holidays (pro rata for part time roles), a generous pension, access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes, and supportive family friendly benefits including an excellent on-site nursery.

How to apply

To apply for this position please submit your CV and a cover letter. You will also be asked some brief questions to help us understand your suitability for the position.

If you wish to discuss this post informally before applying please contact Dr Richard Harrison (r.harrison@surrey.ac.uk) or Dr Alison Taylor (alison.taylor@surrey.ac.uk).

Interviews will be held w/c 12th May.

The University of Surrey is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all.  We place great value on diversity and are seeking to increase the diversity within our community.
