Technical Support Specialist (Development Support)

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

Innovative technology support for our Computer Science students is key to improving the student experience. Our permanent Technical Support Specialist role is in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering and central to our teaching and learning, supporting the delivery and development of high-quality, lab based teaching across Computer Science and Cyber Security programmes.

You will join a vibrant, forward thinking community of academics and technical specialists who are passionate about education and innovation. Working across a broad range of technologies and projects, you will help identify and drive new solutions that enhance automation of assessment and feedback, enable staff to make the best use of our on cloud and on-premises infrastructure, and support students as they engage in practical security challenges.

As part of this team, you will take a proactive role in developing, commissioning, supporting and maintaining technology that underpins our teaching and learning activities. Example activities include web development, scripting and integrating solutions with our online learning environment, and configuring our virtual cloud provision and infrastructure to support security penetration testing and other advanced exercises.

About you

We are looking for someone with strong technical understanding of programming and systems, combined with a practical, collaborative mindset and the confidence to bring new ideas. You will be able to demonstrate experience in problem solving and delivering technology solutions, with a focus on ownership, initiative and timely delivery. You’ll be comfortable working independently as well as in teams, and able to communicate clearly and professionally at all organisational levels.

There will be an expectation for the successful candidate to work on campus, with opportunities for working from home.

Why join us?

  • Join a committed, supportive team and a lively School community focused on innovation in teaching and enhancing the student experience
  • Lead and shape technology solutions that directly impact how our students learn
  • Work with a broad and modern infrastructure landscape, including cloud, virtualisation and security labs
  • Access excellent facilities, resources and opportunities to develop both your technical and professional skills
  • Contribute ideas, take ownership of projects and see the positive impact of your work reflected in the experience of our students

How to apply

Applications are particularly encouraged from recent graduates and individuals with industry experience who are looking for a new challenge and a change of environment. If you are enthusiastic, motivated, and keen to do things differently, eager to bring fresh ideas and make a real contribution, we would be delighted to hear from you.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Professor Helen Treharne, Head of School, h.treharne@surrey.ac.uk.

Interviews for the role will be held during the week of the 10th August 2026 with a start date as soon as possible.
