The role

To conduct research on a 3-year project founded by the 2024 STFC consolidated grant of the Surrey nuclear physics group. The aim of the project is to develop a novel, quantitative quantum dynamical reaction model for multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions which are being intensively investigated at major nuclear research facilities worldwide. The MNT reaction mechanism, characterized by the exchange of many nucleons between a projectile and a target nucleus at collision energies around the Coulomb barrier, is the key for the production of neutron-rich heavy and superheavy isotopes which are crucial for understanding the creation of chemical elements in the universe.  

About you

In collaboration with the team, the post-holder will be expected to contribute with original ideas to the development of the quantum dynamical model, its efficient implementation in a computer code, and the interpretation of the numerical results. The post-holder should have

  • A PhD in Theoretical Physics or Chemistry, ideally with previous experience in modelling low-energy nuclear or chemical reactions.
  • Knowledge of quantum dynamics and associated numerical simulations.
  • Knowledge of high-performance computing.
  • Excellent communication skills with previous experience in writing journal articles for publication and in making oral presentations.
  • An ability to work independently and to propose original research ideas.
