The role

In REF2021, we were placed 15th in the UK for research power in Engineering for the quality and scale of our research, with 41% of our research outputs classed as world leading.

We are seeking to appoint a motivated and rigorous professional, who will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the MicroStructures Study Unit (MSSU) Laboratory. The post holder will participate in the experimental research activities of staff and students and will communicate effectively with different lab users.

The job involves the preparation of test samples using conventional and rapid prototyping techniques, undertaking testing using advanced testing protocols, as well as installing arrangements specific for different testing configurations. The potholder will be required to support experimental projects at all academic levels, as circumstances dictate and as requested by their line manager. They will be responsible for maintaining the testing equipment in excellent working conditions and for the professional upkeep of the laboratory spaces. They will work closely with other technical staff to ensure the safe and efficient running of laboratories, and to showcase the experimental activities of Mechanical Engineering Sciences in relation to student applicants and external sponsors/clients.

The University of Surrey signed the Technician Commitment led by the Science Council, to ensure greater visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians across all disciplines. This position will provide opportunities to work alongside an experienced technical team, attend research seminars and build professional contacts across the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

The post holder will oversee another member of the school technical support team and will contribute to their appraisal process. They will have responsibility in advising regarding planning technical resource management and producing continuity plans with respect to testing facilities for the school. The post holder will act as the School Safety Advisor, ensuring school compliance with the University Health & Safety policy and regulations,

About you

The post holder will maintain the MSSU Laboratory and set up and run laboratory tests. They will have good communication and IT skills. A qualification in Materials Engineering, or similar discipline, is desirable. Some relevant work experience in the above fields related to optical or electron would be an advantage.
