Laboratory technician (Nutrition and Oncology)

This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive individual with a strong interest in Oncology and Nutrition research to contribute to world-class scientific projects. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting and enhancing the research capability of the laboratories while gaining valuable experience in the management of research laboratory areas.

The role

The University of Surrey is a looking to recruit an enthusiastic and adaptable lab technician (full-time post, 1FT) to join our technical support team within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

The post holder will work in the section of Nutrition and Oncology under the direction of the Senior Laboratory Technician, providing technical support to staff and student research activities.

Responsibilities include supporting the day-to-day running of lab activities and helping to maintain a safe working environment.

Key duties include

  • Manage day-to-day running of the laboratories - maintaining tidiness, safety, and appropriate stock levels of consumables and materials.
  • Provide technical advice, training, and assistance to academic staff and students
  • Assist with maintenance, calibration, and record-keeping of all laboratory equipment
  • Monitor gas supplies (CO₂ , Helium and liquid nitrogen) and arrange deliveries
  • Assist in general lab waste disposal and chemical waste management.
  • Support general laboratory operations, including washing consumables and autoclaving solutions and plasticware.
  • Working with the team to ensure a reliable, customer-friendly service

About you

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about supporting research and contributing to a safe, well-organised laboratory environment. You will ideally have experience of working in a laboratory environment and have a good understanding of the Health & Safety requirements associated with research settings. Full training will be provided on the relevant aspects of lab safety, chemical handling and biosafety involved.

This role requires is a practical and methodical approach to work, the ability to undertake manual handling of materials and the ability to work independently while demonstrating effective management. A high level of organisation is essential.
