The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research. We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world.

Currently, one of our most exciting projects is the launch of our new Medical School. An enthusiastic and creative team of medical educators are working within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences to develop a new School of Medicine. Our innovative programme aims to produce a new type of doctor: excellent and holistic clinical leaders who can drive change, delivering integrated and technologically advanced healthcare for their patients and communities.

We are looking for two Lecturers in Anatomy to join the School at this exciting time. Anatomy is an integral part of the undergraduate medical curriculum and will be taught primarily using prosections in a HTA licensed cadaver lab. Models, bones, living anatomy, ultrasound, virtual histology, radiology and imaging, and leading commercial software will be used to support teaching and learning. There will be a strong emphasis on interprofessional and technology enhanced learning.

The role

Successful candidates will focus on delivering high-quality anatomy teaching (to include gross anatomy, histology and embryology) for year one of our medical undergraduate curriculum. The first year of the course is structured in themes, based around clinical cases, which enables medical students to learn clinically relevant anatomy as the foundation to the subsequent year clinical rotations. You will support first year students in small and large group teaching (including case-based and team-based learning) ensuring teaching is inclusive and supports interprofessional learning wherever possible.

As part of the role, you will create high quality cadaveric prosections for use in teaching and will contribute to the general administration and safe running of the cadaver lab. In addition, we would expect you to contribute to our admissions process, to standard setting, writing knowledge tests, and exam invigilation.

Please note that these roles will be offered at either Lecturer A or Lecturer B level depending on your experience (see job profiles below for further details). The salary range for a Lecturer A starts at £36,024. The salary range for a Lecturer B starts at £45,585.

About you

To join our new School, you’ll need to be a forward-looking individual with a ‘can do’ attitude and the ambition to drive innovation in medical education. A subject expert in anatomy, you’ll hold a qualification in the subject (or a related subject): at Lecturer A level this will likely be a BSc or MSc in anatomy, at Lecturer B level this will usually be a doctoral degree or higher professional qualification. You will have significant experience teaching anatomy at an undergraduate level, including in small group settings. You’ll have experience of dissecting/creating cadaveric prosections and working under the Human Tissue Act, adhering to all conditions and provisions for anatomy.

Personally you’ll work well in a collaborative environment, working flexibly on a wide range of tasks with colleagues and external partners. You may have a teaching qualification, or you will be happy to complete this during your first year with the University. You may also hold fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or Academy of Medical Educators.
