The University of Surrey School of Law is committed to the highest quality scholarship and dynamic, supportive teaching to help students become intellectual leaders in the legal profession. The School has recently been ranked within the top 20 UK Law Schools in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021, in the top 15 UK Law Schools for employability in the Guardian University Guide 2021, and 38th overall amongst UK Law Schools in the Complete University Guide 2021 League Table. The School comprises three main research clusters: The Surrey Centre for Law and Philosophy, the Surrey Centre for International and Environmental Law and our Law and Technology Hub. Our academic staff members are a dynamic, collegial and international group of experienced legal practitioners, skilled teachers and leading researchers.

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Financial Law to strengthen our research and teaching profiles in financial regulation, FinTech, and related business law subjects such as securities regulation, private law areas, commercial law, company law and sustainable finance, among others. Candidates are expected to show an excellent record of scholarship with published work of world-class significance and rigour. They should also demonstrate strong potential for generating research income. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a record of outstanding teaching in law at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For this reason, it is essential for candidates to possess a qualifying law degree (LLB, JD or similar) and a doctorate in a related field is strongly preferred. We are keen on candidates who combine theoretical understanding of the area with demonstrated practical experience or expertise.

Candidates should show resourcefulness and enthusiasm for improving learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and be able to contribute teaching and administrative leadership on our undergraduate programmes, particularly our Law & Technology Pathway LLB, and our FinTech & Policy MSc programme run with Surrey Business School. Candidates will also show ability to strengthen our Law & Technology Hub through collaborative research projects and leadership at School and University levels.

Finally, it is essential for candidates to possess all the qualities essential to high quality pastoral care and student support: compassion, empathy, proactiveness, conscientiousness, organisation and resilience. In return for the above, we offer a generous remuneration package, which includes relocation assistance where appropriate, the latest teaching facilities, and access to a variety of staff development opportunities.

We are committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equitable opportunities for all in pursuit of Surrey’s vision of being a leading global University. We work together to create a truly inclusive culture. We place great value on diversity and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We are seeking to increase the diversity within our community and would particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities. Following University policy, appointments are always made on merit.

For an informal discussion about the position, please email Professor Alexander Sarch, Head of School, at a.sarch@surrey.ac.uk.
