The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) is seeking to recruit two 3-year PhD studentship in Satellite Communications or mm-wave/THz Antennas. The studentships will include both theoretical and applied research.

Space-air-ground integrated network is the future communication network and is the key solution for mobile network coverage and massive machine type communications. The integration of satellite communications and B5G/6G, plays a key role in the development of future space information integrated network. These projects have the potential to collaborate extensively with both internal and external partners including Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, particularly, but not exclusively in the following areas:

  • Satellite millimetre-wave communications and co-existence
  • Large array antenna in mm-wave or THz frequency bands
  • Meta antenna in mm-wave or THz frequency bands
  • Low Earth orbit mega constellations
  • Satellites and The Internet of Things

The developed antennas or satcom could be experimented on software-defined millimetre-wave/THz transceiver system from National Instrument (

ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising on all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best in class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state-of-the-art lab and computing facilities.

5GIC established in 2012, is the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners.

Candidates should have a first-class honours degree or equivalent, or a good MSc Degree, in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics or Mathematics. Candidates must be confident in wireless/ satellite communications, or antenna engineering and EM modelling tools. Previous experience in satcom or antenna design will be a key advantage.

These studentships are available to candidates of all nationalities. It is funded by the university for 3 years will cover student fees and a tax-free stipend starting at £15,209 per annum.
