The Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit two members of academic staff to support its research and teaching in Experimental Fluid Mechanics. The Department benefits from extensive national and international collaboration, excellent facilities, and strong links with industry.

The senior appointment, expected to be at Professor or Reader level, requires a prominent research scientist who can assume leadership of the research activities of the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, including the Environmental Flow Research Centre (EnFlo). The appointee will possess proven management and leadership qualities and have a well-established international reputation in experimental fluid mechanics and be expected to develop laboratory based research and wider collaborative work with other research organisations. The appointee will also be expected to develop EnFlo's role as an NCAS Facility for Atmospheric Measurements and work closely with the National Wind Tunnel Facility.

The second appointment, expected to be at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, requires a talented and enthusiastic individual who will be expected to develop research in an appropriate area of experimental fluid mechanics and support other research activities within the laboratory, and will have demonstrated considerable strength in research in a relevant branch of fluid mechanics or meteorology.

Candidates for either position should demonstrate achievements in scholarship and research at a national and international level, and should ideally have experience of teaching within the Higher Education sector. Enthusiasm for collaboration with both industry and other research organisations, and the ability to secure research funding are essential attributes of both positions.

The Fluids Laboratory is part of the Aerodynamics and Environmental Flow Research Group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences. It is a well-founded laboratory comprising a National Facility (EnFlo), a 1.1x1.4m aeronautical and automotive wind tunnel, a number of smaller facilities and a 12m water towing tank, along with comprehensive instrumentation and technical support.

Each appointee will be expected to teach students on our undergraduate programmes in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and wider programmes in the Department. These are well established programmes which attract high calibre students. Student support may also extend to our Formula Student and UAS competition teams, together with helping to develop further our taught programmes. An ability and enthusiasm for delivering a high quality student experience are essential. Chartered Engineer status would also be desirable.

The Department is highly rated for both teaching and research (RAE2014), the latter undertaken within four groups (Aerodynamics and Environmental Flow, Automotive Engineering, Engineering Materials and Biomedical Engineering) that operate within a broader Faculty network. Collaboration with colleagues in the Department and in other research groups within the Faculty is expected.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award and is committed to equality of opportunity and the promotion of diversity for the benefit of all.

Depending on experience, qualifications and research track record, appointments will be made at Professor or Reader level and Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Alan Robins (Director, EnFlo, T: +44 1483 689684, E: a.robins@surrey.ac.uk).
