The University of Surrey is one of the UK’s leading public research universities with 17,000 students and 2,500 staff. We’re looking for a talented and creative Social Media Manager who will lead communication through the University’s main channels and be an inspiring best practice role model for other social media managers across the University.

It’s a great time to join us. A new communication strategy is in the process of being developed, and this postholder has the opportunity to innovate and take our social media channels to the next level.

As Social Media Manager you will be responsible for owning the evolution and execution of a new social media strategy, along with planning and managing the main University social media channels and leading on governance and best practice. You will also be responsible for producing engaging and valued content, reporting on, and continuously improving our performance. You will manage at least one member of staff, but will be expected to build a virtual network of social media specialists across the University who you will work with to support our communications strategy and build expertise.

This role sits within the University’s Communication and Public Affairs team and works centrally to support University-level communications. We’re looking to develop an engaged and inclusive community amongst our students and staff, to recruit high quality students from around the world, and to foster relationships with our local community. Our social media channels have an important role to play in this, as well as promoting the University’s achievements to wider external audiences including other research institutions and governments, both in the UK and overseas.

Your application will demonstrate significant experience of managing social media channels for an organisation, including planning and creating engaging content for day-to-day engagement, as well as ongoing campaigns. You will have experience of setting channel strategy for an organisation, and producing longer-term social media plans, informed by audience insights, data and wider trends. Experience of managing people, setting priorities, and managing workloads is also essential.

We offer a generous pension, relocation assistance, flexible working options including blended home/campus working locations (dependent on work duties), access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes, and supportive family-friendly benefits including an excellent on-site nursery. Job share applicants who apply as a package, will be welcomed.

Closing date: 9am on 25th October 2021

Interview date: likely to be w/c 18 November 2021
