Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher who will lead experimental inter-disciplinary research to develop and improve biocoatings. A biocoating is a type of paint in which bacteria are encased. The bacteria do not grow but are metabolically-active, so that they can absorb greenhouse gases and release gases as a fuel source. The research will make innovations to the coatings microstructures and compositions to address problems with existing biocoatings, including osmotic stress, dehydration, poor transport of gases, and weak adhesion between the bacteria and the coating. The researcher will work with a PhD student to add bacteria to colloidal dispersions and deposit coatings. The researcher will also characterise the coatings with various techniques of microscopy and will evaluate the biocoatings' performance.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience with the characterisation and processing of colloids, combined with previous research experience at the interface with biology, such as in microbiology, biomaterials or tissue engineering. It is hoped that the researcher will input original ideas to guide the direction of this novel and risky research. A high level of flexibility and imagination by the researcher will help to ensure the project's success. A PhD in a relevant subject, such as physics, chemistry, materials science or chemical engineering, is required.

The University of Surrey is amongst the highest achieving universities in the United Kingdom, having been awarded the Times/Sunday Times University of the Year Award for 2016.
