WITH THE CENTRE FOR VISION SPEECH AND SIGNAL PROCESSING (SURREY, UK)

The Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) at the University of Surrey seeks to recruit an outstanding postdoctoral researcher in the fields of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT; Blockchain) with application to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Funded by the Interreg NWE Blockstart project, the post will contribute to the Blockstart Interreg NWE project's aims of developing commercially relevant research into decentralized platforms (https://www.nweurope.eu/projects/project-search/blockstart/).  The role has two core components:  i) to undertake new research exploring application of Blockchain technology to Federated Machine Learning;  ii) to liaise with other Blockstart project members across disciplines to help advise external partners (e.g. SMEs) on technical matters pertaining to Blockchain.  The role will also contribute to the EPSRC research centre DECaDE: Centre for the Decentralized Digital Economy, a newly launched £10M research centre exploring the fusion of Artificial Intelligence and Distributed Ledger Technology / Blockchain for exploration of decentralized platforms in the emerging data economy (https://decade.ac.uk). The expected start date is 1 July 2021.

The project will investigate federated machine learning (FML) methods, to train novel AI models (e.g. for Computer Vision or other signal processing applications) across distributed private data stores. The aim of the project is to investigate, develop and demonstrate new ways to enable FML using Distributed Ledgers and Blockchain technology to create trusted shared AI models from private data. The successful candidate will work on the Blockstart project alongside experts in Machine Learning and Distributed Ledgers within DECaDE and the broader CVSSP, as well as with Surrey Business School experts, and interact remotely with industry collaborators to communicate research outcomes as well as potentially assist in the co-supervision of PhD students in this area.

Successful applicants will be working under supervision of Prof. John Collomosse and will benefit from the environments provided by Surrey’s Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing – the UK’s top ranked research centre in Machine Learning and Computer Vision with over 170 researchers.

We are looking to recruit an excellent researcher with core skills in of Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology and ideally also with some experience of deep learning or machine learning more generally. Strong software implementation skills (e.g. Python) are required to interact with other developers on the project to integrate their research into a live prototype system for trial. Applicants are expected to hold, or soon to gain, a PhD in a field closely linked to Distributed Ledger Technology/Blockchain and will ideally have some working experience of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence although this is not essential.
