Recently ranked 4th in the Guardian League Table for UK Universities and shortlisted by the Sunday Times for the University of the Year Award, The University of Surrey is looking to recruit two talented and experienced External Communications and Public Relations Officers within our central team to promote and protect the reputation of the University of Surrey locally, nationally and internationally.

You will be expected to collaborate with colleagues and academics from across the University to deliver multi-channel reputation-building campaigns and draw upon your strong network of journalist contacts to secure high profile coverage.

You will be a qualified communications professional with extensive experience of communications, public relations, social media, news management and public affairs – and you will be very accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment delivering high quality communications support.

You will have knowledge and understanding of the work practices, processes and procedures relevant to the role, such as media campaign planning and horizon scanning, drafting news releases/case studies and ‘selling in’ to relevant publications/broadcast media, preparing media packs and coverage reports which may include broader sector/commercial awareness. The success of this work will have a very significant impact on the future success and overall financial health of the University.

You will also have operational knowledge of systems relevant to your own field of work such as using media databases, social media platforms and monitoring tools, distribution software & newswires in terms of functionality and capability and knowledge of products/services available.

Strong relationship management capabilities are also essential to the role, as well as the ability to forge good working relationships with a wide variety of journalists and key internal partners.

You will be joining at an exciting time of change and opportunity and will be required to contribute immediately and provide strong project management experience. Experience of working in a corporate communications department is desirable. Excellent copy-writing, planning, influencing and communication skills are essential with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
