The University of Surrey is an international university with an excellent teaching and a research profile that is innovative, forward thinking and achieving notable impact. The expanding Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, is building capacity in Health and Biomedical Informatics to deliver cutting-edge research across key themes underpinning the University of Surrey’s Research Strategy, including Innovation for Health and Digital Innovation.  We invite applications for a new university lecturer position to develop research and deliver teaching in Health Data Sciences.

At Surrey, we are at a critical juncture of our development of new methods for insight into real-world data and e/digital health. This includes novel technological approaches to accelerate our activity in this informatics arena, as well as the Digital Health Technology Accelerator which is part of a multi-partner enterprise to enable innovation and implementation of digital devices and ways of working to improve patient care and enable individuals to live in their homes independently and for longer as they age. In addition to projects linked to Health, Veterinary and Biosciences, this new post will engage with the multi-disciplinary vHive centre, which aspires to promote development and adoption of digital innovation in animal-human health under our ‘one health, one medicine’ vision, as well asother departments and sections across the Faculty and the University, to support multidisciplinary and translational research.

Our new initiatives in Health and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Surrey thus offer exciting opportunities for the successful candidate to develop and further their career at Surrey in novel and emerging areas of informatics and applied data sciences. The successful candidate will join our multidisciplinary community underpinning translational health and biomedical informatics, which links researchers in statistical multi-omics, systems biology, digital health, and clinical and experimental medicine, as well as local NHS trusts.

The appointed lecturer in Health Data Science will contribute to and build programmes in health data science and health big data analytics, by developing novel approaches in the areas of machine learning and the analysis of large-scale health and biomedical data. This role will also contribute to the development of veterinary informatics, and research to support investigations that interface between humans and animals.

Potential candidates will have demonstrable experience in real-world clinically-relevant data, informatics techniques, data science, and statistics. These may include conventional AI, statistical modelling, bioinformatics, data linkage and data mining, as well as insights or experience of where and when to include novel machine learning and other advanced techniques.

Research in the Faculty is conducted in four Schools; each with their own discipline-specific identity: the School of Biosciences and Medicine, the School of Health Sciences, the School of Psychology and the School of Veterinary Medicine.  The research disciplines in the Schools are connected by Faculty and University-wide collaboration streams with the remit to develop larger research projects or programmes which require multidisciplinary teams with expertise from several schools and external partners.  Beside a vibrant working environment on a leafy campus in Guildford close to London, this post offers extensive career development opportunities and resources to support you in building your own research team and fulfilling your potential.  If you are a team player with a ‘can do’ attitude and a desire to achieve in your field, personally and as part of a team, we will look forward to receiving your application.
