The University of Surrey is an international university with a world-class teaching and research profile and an enterprising spirit. The School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences undertakes research and teaching within three closely related themes of resilience, green living and living, drawing on research and teaching strengths in mechanical, aerospace, automotive, materials and biomedical engineering. The School is seeking to build on its engineering heritage through a strategic growth of our research and teaching activity in engineering resilience. We are looking to recruit a number of posts in the area of engineering resilience as applied to transport, energy, environment and design. Engineering resilience is driven by a desire and need to support the functioning of modern society in a manner that allows the society to continue to operate effectively despite changes in external factors.

Professor in Energy Resilience

Secure, reliable and resilient critical systems, such as energy, are essential for modern society. To achieve this aim requires holistic approaches that address the fundamental technologies and product designs, the materials and manufacturing routes employed, geographic deployment, ageing and repair. We are looking for an individual to lead and support this activity through teaching and research in the area of energy generation technologies, with a particular emphasis on non-photovoltaic low carbon solutions including wind, motion, thermal and nuclear.

The School 

The School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences is a major contributor to the research and teaching activities of the Faculty of Engineering and Physics Sciences, and the University as a whole. We are home to four Research Centres, in Automotive Engineering, Aerodynamics and Environmental Flow, Biomedical Engineering, and Engineering Materials. Our research activity is reflected strongly in our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. The School is home to around 45 academic members of staff, 700 undergraduate students and 100 doctoral students, as well as 40 research, technical and administrative staff. Each of our research centres are supported by cutting edge experimental facilities including advanced microscopy and surface analysis, wind tunnels, mechanical and vibration testing, design centre, and mechanical workshops. We are also home to a Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre and a NERC-National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences. The University has recently launched Institutes in Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability, both of which have strong resonance with activities undertaken in the School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences.

As a member of the School, ideally you should be able to teach modules across our core undergraduate programmes as well as supporting the broader research activity and postgraduate student supervision. For example, we have won four Queen’s Anniversary Prizes and were awarded Gold for our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) submission.
