As Research Computing Engineer, you will be part of a close-knit and enthusiastic team, and one which has embraced the “infrastructure as code” approach to systems automation. You’ll have the opportunity to work across a wide range of predominately Linux based systems, including large-scale storage, HTCondor compute pools, HPC and general IT infrastructure components such as directory services.

You will play a leading role in their provisioning, configuration, security, on-going operation, monitoring, and continuous improvement. You’ll also be getting hands-on with tools such as Ansible, Chef and Docker to manage our services across on-premises hardware, Cloud and Virtual platforms.

Other responsibilities & criteria include:

  • Take the lead on architecting, and developing significant new research technology investments, using your experience and expertise to inform critical technology choices
  • Undertake the full range of system administration tasks including user management, building/deploying systems, and installing scientific software for use across HPC and other research platforms, performance benchmarking, resource usage and availability monitoring and incident response.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the automation of repetitive system administration tasks in the form of Ansible playbooks and roles. You’ll be expected to use git for version control, change management and collaboration.  
  • Pro-actively and reactively identify, diagnose, and resolve faults and areas of suboptimal performance across research platforms. Collect and communicate complex data about platform usage to other members of the team and customers to improve customer experience
  • Communicate directly with customers face-to-face helping them to run their applications and submit workloads, as well as providing specialist guidance
  • Have a good & practical working knowledge of Linux Systems & High Performance Computing (HPC), as well as experience working with Ansible or Chef
  • Experience of working with research groups to support computationally intensive research would be desirable
