A vacancy has appeared for a Researcher to join the Horizon 2020 project GREENER (Integrated Systems for Effective Environmental Remediation), a collaborative project with universities and companies from Europe and China. The main objective of GREENER is the development of innovative, efficient and low-cost hybrid solutions integrating bioremediation technologies with bioelectrochemical systems, in particular addressing the removal of pollutants from water and soil and sediments.

The researcher in the Systems Microbiology laboratory at the University of Surrey will work on a fixed term contract over a period of 9 months. The appointed researcher should have expertise in the analysis of microbial communities including the use of bioinformatic pipelines for metagenome and metatranscriptome analysis, as well as knowledge of advanced microbiology techniques and biochemical analysis. Experience in Microbial Electrochemical Technology would be an advantage.

Main Responsibilities/Activities

• The main responsibility of the post-holder will be the analysis of microbial communities in contaminated water and soil samples, and the identification and selection of microbial species able to degrade organic and inorganic pollutants. Based on the metabolic capability of selected microorganisms, design and construct artificial communities to be tested in bioelectrochemical systems.

• Together with the Principal Investigator, the Researcher will liaise with other members of the consortium and colleagues from related groups in relation to technical and experimental details, and to advise and direct their experimental work.

• The Researcher will participate in the dissemination of the results of the project at scientific meetings and in published articles.

Person Specification

In addition to the criteria outlined in the accompanying generic Research Fellow (1A) Role Profile, the post holder should have (E = Essential; D = Desirable):

  • BSc in a closely allied subject (E)
  • PhD (or close to completion) in a closely allied subject (E)
  • Experience in the analysis of microbial communities, including use of bioinformatic pipelines for metagenome and metatranscriptome analysis (E)
  • Knowledge about Bioelectrochemical Systems (e.g. Microbial Fuel Cells) and in the use of single species or microbial communities for the utilization of liquid and solid feedstocks (D)
  • Experience in designing and conducting microbial experiments and metabolic and biochemical analysis (E)
  • Data analysis skills (E)
  • Ability to work independently (E)
  • Good interpersonal skills (E)
  • Ability to operate efficiently in an interdisciplinary research team (E)
  • Scientific writing skills and proficiency in English (E)
  • Experience in supervising UG students (D)

The appointee will work in the multidisciplinary Systems Microbiology laboratory, composed of microbiologists, biochemists and bioengineers, and will liaise with the colleagues in the EU and China

Interviews - Week commencing the 30th August 2021
