Early Career Fellowship in Machine Learning (Lecturer A)

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey seeks to recruit an outstanding post-doctoral researcher as Early Career Fellow in Machine Learning (Lecturer A), on a full-time basis, for a period of up to five years, in any of the following core research areas within machine learning or artificial intelligence:

  • Robust, privacy-preserving, and explainable machine learning
  • Reinforcement learning and deep reinforcement learning
  • Spiking neural networks and neural plasticity
  • Natural language processing
  • Computer vision

The Department of Computer Science has a world-class reputation in these areas and regularly publishes at top-level conferences and journals. The Department is home to the Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE) group which holds world-leading expertise in evolutionary computation, computational neuroscience, autonomous and self-organising systems, reinforcement learning, Bayesian learning, privacy-preserving machine learning, explainable AI, computer vision, and image and natural language processing.

We are looking for a talented individual who is interested in impactful research and can develop their own research agenda, both independently and in collaboration with other members of the Department.

The successful candidate will receive support towards conference travel and equipment and will benefit from the collaborative, internationally focussed activities in the Department and its research groups. There will also be an opportunity to work with PhD students. We expect the successful candidate to become an independent researcher, take part in the preparation of research proposals, and provide teaching support on our taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

This position is initially for 2 years with possibility of extension for up to 3 more years. The Department seeks to establish a long-term career planning for the post holder, with appropriate mentoring in place, and will be encouraging the candidate to apply for future permanent academic positions within the Department.

Interviews will be held remotely in the second half of October. Positions are available for immediate appointment with preferred start date around January/February 2022.
