Location:  Guildford
Salary:  £65,578 to £87,493 per annum
Post Type:  Full Time
Closing Date:  23.59 hours BST on Sunday 02 October 2022

The University of Surrey is a leading teaching and research UK Higher Education institution. We provide life-changing education for our students and impactful research that delivers solutions to global problems. This year, the Times Higher Education rated Surrey as being 55th in the world for impact; the National Student Survey put the University in the top 10 in the UK; we rank in the top 20 in the national Research Excellence Framework for the quality of outputs submitted; and Surrey is number one in the UK for graduate employability by the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022.

The University currently has a small online provision but a big ambition to grow this considerably. We want our reputation for world-class teaching and research to reach a global audience of lifelong learners and we are looking for an inspiring leader to join us as Director of Surrey Online University Learning, to drive and deliver this key strategic priority.

The role

The Director of Online Learning will be tasked with providing strategic direction and operational management for digital learning platforms and solutions; scoping and creating a business case, implementing the delivery plan, and ultimately delivering results. You will work closely with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic and other key stakeholders to build an online platform that delivers digital solutions to the classroom using instructional design methodology, driving the development and implementation of the University’s online learning growth strategy.

We are keen to provide a mix of fully online and hybrid innovative online courses that address both individual and business need - the Director will work closely with the academic community to collaboratively develop courses that are scalable, commercially viable, polished, and competitive in the marketplace.

Initially we will be partnering with an Online Programme Management (OPM) company to achieve this, so part of the remit of this role will be to assess requirements, research the market, and establish and maintain the relationship with the chosen OPM.

In addition to online learning, The Director will also be responsible for developing our public presence and for building strategic and commercial partnerships with regional, national, and international businesses.

About you

We are looking for a commercially minded strategic and operational leader who really understands what is needed to develop and launch a successful product. You will have proven experience of taking a product to market and the ability to deliver and exceed growth expectations. Experience of the UK HE sector and/or the global online learning market would be desirable but more importantly we are looking for someone with a good understanding of hybrid learning solutions in the context of product development and delivery.

We are looking for a leader who is committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and motivated environment, driving growth and facilitating high performance by articulating a clear vision, purpose, direction, and objectives. You will build strong external partnerships and will have proven experience of securing and negotiating commercial contracts.

What we can offer you

We think Surrey is an amazing place to work and we are carefully crafting a dynamic, flexible, and exciting atmosphere to help our employees work and thrive. Our campus is based in beautiful landscaped grounds, offering greenery, a lake, and plenty of space for colleagues to meet, collaborate and reflect. We are also happy to support flexible and hybrid working.

How to apply

To apply for this role, please upload a CV and cover letter detailing how you demonstrate the knowledge, experience and competence required for this role (as outlined in the “Person Specification” section of the Job Description).

Interview for this position will be held in person on Tuesday 11th October 2022.

For more information or a discussion about the role please contact Professor Osama Khan (Pro Vice Chancellor, Academic) via Kate Lascelles (EA to PVC Academic), email
