We are excited to invite applications for a three-year Dean’s Research Fellowship in the School of Biosciences (Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences) at the University of Surrey.  You will be part of a team of scientists undertaking research in a vibrant, inter-disciplinary environment.

In addition to driving your own research interests, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with research academics and bioinformaticians across the different schools to develop analytical tools of multi-omic, single-cell and spatial data. In particular, in the development of AI methodologies to integrate analysis of large datasets from different technologies. These data will include high/dimensional spectral-flow cytometry, single cell multi-omic (RNA-seq, CITE-seq, EpitoFF, DNA-seq, but also metabolic data from new mass-spectrometry based analytical tools) and spatial single-cell multi-omic data (transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolic) as well as data from confocal ImmunoFluorescence. The applicant will benefit from access to all these technologies, producing complex and high-dimensional datasets; which also renders their analysis and interpretation a complex and technical challenge. These new methodologies will ultimately help to strengthen analytical tools in Systems Biology, namely Systems Immunology and drive our ambition in Systems Metabolism. The applicant will benefit from, and contribute to, expertise available in the newly formed People-centred AI institute.

Whilst taking the lead on preparing research grant applications is core to the role, the Research Fellow will also be encouraged to develop the breadth of experience and network of partnerships within the University, nationally and internationally to enable strong research and innovation funding successes.  The Research Fellow will undertake data collection and analysis, writing of reports, preparing manuscripts for publication and writing bids. Development of innovation projects for societal benefit, such as Impact Case Studies for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercises and patent applications, is also expected.

The successful candidate will be invited to fully engage in the life of the School such as some teaching, supporting students as a personal tutor and supervising student projects.  You will also be able to take advantage of completing our Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching, which will also enable you to gain membership of the Higher Education Academy.   Whilst this post is fixed term, it is hoped that the Fellowship will provide the development and support (the post holder will receive £10k per annum for consumables) to enable the Fellow to establish an independent position by the end of the Fellowship, be that either a permanent lectureship secured through competitive appointment or by securing external funding to support an externally funded research post with us before the end of the three years.

We look forward to receiving applications from exceptional early-career researchers who have already demonstrated independence by securing research funding and are keen to become future research leaders in their field. As part of your application, please provide a 2-page cover letter outlining your 5-year research plan.  In addition to your salary, you will receive pension contributions via the Universities Superannuation Scheme, a generous annual leave entitlement, relocation assistance where appropriate, childcare assistance and discounted membership to University sports facilities.
