The Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey invites applications for a Lectureship in Mathematics. We are seeking to appoint someone who will extend our current strengths. We are especially interested in applicants working in areas related to

but we also welcome strong applicants working in other areas of mathematics.

The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in Mathematics or a closely related discipline. They will have shown the potential for achieving and sustaining a leading independent research programme as well as having been active in developing and submitting competitive applications for external funding to support their research. They will also be committed to pursuing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and in supervising graduate students.

Research within the Department is associated with five broad themes, namely: Data Science and Dynamics; Dynamical Systems and PDEs; Fields, Strings and Geometry; Mathematics of Life and Social Sciences; and Nonlinear Waves and Geometric Fluid Mechanics. The Department’s portfolio of undergraduate programmes consists of its MMath degree and a range of vibrant BSc programmes. The Department intends to grow its postgraduate MSc-level programmes in the coming years.

Applications from all groups currently under-represented in academic posts are particularly encouraged. We are working to improve the present gender balance within the Department, and particularly welcome applications from women. Both the Department and the University hold Athena SWAN Bronze awards and are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment.

An application consists of a Curriculum Vitae, a list of publications (highlighting up to 5 publications regarded as most significant), a statement of future research plans (no more than 2 sides of A4), and a summary of teaching experience. Application forms can be found via the link below.

Informal enquiries are welcome and may be made to the Head of Department, Prof Gianne Derks (G.Derks@surrey.ac.uk).
