About the role

The role of Head of Research Finance provides financial partnering to the Research and Innovation portfolio across the University of Surrey, working closely with the University’s Vice-Provost Research & Innovation (VPR&I) and leadership team.

The role is the primary point of contact for the VPR&I and team on all financial matters, and is responsible for financial reporting, analysis and control across all research and innovation activities, including Research Grants and Contracts, activities funded by HEIF and other block grant income, and all aspects of funding for PGR students.

Specifically, you will be accountable for :

  • ensuring that the University meets the financial requirements of external funders across the Research & Innovation portfolio
  • ensuring research income and costs are accounted for in accordance with current accounting standards and University policies
  • providing a grant management service that meets the needs of principal investigators and supervisors
  • providing a “payroll” service to students in receipt of studentship funding
  • providing R&I Management Information to managers and leaders across the University.
  • developing controls and policies in relation to research income

The role manages the Research Finance team, including post-award, pre-award via a dotted line, studentships and analysis & management reporting.

About you

We are looking for an individual who

  • Is professionally qualified with a relevant degree or postgraduate finance qualification, plus  relevant experience and proven success leading and supporting a strategically important function/specialist area.

Or has:

Substantial and extensive vocational experience demonstrating professional development and achievement in a series of progressively more demanding, influential and broad work roles, backed by evidence of deep and broad knowledge of the whole functional work area.

  • Has experience in leading and managing operational teams
  • Has strong practical knowledge and experience of enforcing financial controls and working with auditors
  • Has proven ability to build strong and effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, partnering with non-finance colleagues to achieve strategic and operational goal
