This is an exciting opportunity for a creative User Experience (UX)/User Interface (UI) Designer to work in the Higher Education sector alongside other talented Marketing & Communications professionals. The post-holder will champion the user experience, designing engaging and effective interfaces across our channels.

This role will:

  • Design user interfaces for the University of Surrey websites, intranet, apps and other digital products. 
  • Generate wireframes and mock-ups to present design concepts to stakeholders, and once approved, finalise designs ready to be coded by the developers. 
  • Ensure that the interface structure/information architecture satisfies the marketing strategy, digital strategy, user experience design principles and all use-cases and product requirements. 
  • Develop and maintain digital visual language guidelines, design systems and resources to facilitate best practice in user interface designs. Communicate these guidelines with all relevant parties. 
  • Maintain consistent and high quality user experiences that work effectively across multiple digital devices and browsers, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards. 
  • Co-operate with the technical team (front-end developers, back-end developers, University IT, and academic researchers), to balance usability and technical concerns in UX/UI design. 
  • Work with colleagues to deliver user testing (including usability testing, A/B tests, guerilla testing) to measure, iterate and improve the user experience.  
  • Work with other internal and external designers to ensure that all digital design adheres to the University’s digital visual language guidelines.  

The successful candidate will be:

  • Highly specialised at designing user interfaces for web and mobile.
  • Possess experience of working in a busy digital design environment, and have a strongly established portfolio of web design projects where they directly influenced usability backed up by impressive technical skills.
  • Expert in creating full UX documentation, i.e. storyboarding/wire-framing, content mapping, concepting, schematics, prototyping etc.
  • Experience of designing for desktop, tablet and mobile devices with proven ability in optimising designs for multiple target devices.
  • Enhanced understanding of core web technologies (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and web content management systems (Preferably Drupal 8, WordPress) as well as advanced knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite programmes.
