The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), the home for the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey, is seeking to recruit a full-time researcher to work on the EPSRC funded project: New Air Interface Techniques for Future Massive Machine Communications.

For this opening, the successful candidate will be required to have research experience in wireless communications system design in University and/or Industry environments. Their areas of specialisation should be in optimization theory, machine learning, radio resource management, advanced digital signal processing, modulation and coding schemes, graph theory, massive MIMO, array processing, new waveforms, and non-orthogonal multiple access techniques, and PHY-MAC cross-layer optimization for 5G.

ICS has been established for over ten years as one of a number of autonomous research centers at the University of Surrey. Housing over 160 researchers, PhD students and academic staff, its research focuses on future communication systems including mobile and wireless communications, satellite communications, and networking (management, protocols and security).

5GIC brings together leading academics and key industry partners in a shared vision to help define and develop the 5G infrastructure that will underpin the way we communicate, work and live our everyday lives in the future.

Applicants should have a good honors degree in wireless communications or electric engineering. Preference will be given to those with proven experience. Applicants are expected to have track record of publications, good problem solving and analytical skills, to be proactive, to engage with other researchers and to be self-motivated. The successful candidate will, in collaboration with other researchers, specify, design and implement the systems under investigation.

The appointment will be made either at Research Fellow (RA2 level) or Research Fellow (RA1 level) depending on suitability. Please indicate explicitly which role you are applying for in the supporting statements.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,302) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,236).
