The University of Surrey has an impressive reputation and track record of successful commercialisation of science and technology research, with a growing portfolio of activity. As part of Surrey’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Impact Acceleration Account (IAA), the University has received additional funding specifically to support and develop commercialisation activity amongst Surrey’s social science academic community in the ESRC-funded Commercialising Research out of Social Sciences (CRoSS) project.

As a new role within the ESRC IAA team, based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), the post-holder will have direct responsibility for successful delivery of the CRoSS project, working closely with the ESRC IAA Manager to deliver the agreed aims and objectives. The post-holder will be expected to proactively identify and develop opportunities emerging from Surrey’s social sciences research portfolio, support researchers to develop these through acceleration pathways, and build processes and frameworks to support commercial outputs from these opportunities (e.g. for social enterprise, licence deals, consultancy). The ideal candidate will bring previous experience of innovation and collaboration within commercial/third sectors and/or entrepreneurship, and will have a good understanding of the strengths and opportunities of social science research and HE innovation.

This presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to and help shape the commercialisation agenda at Surrey, and aligns closely with broader streams of work being undertaken within the University to enhance the support we offer around innovation and commercialisation opportunities. The post-holder will work closely with the ESRC IAA team and the Innovation Strategy’s Technology Transfer Office, as well as an existing ecosystem of innovation and commercialisation support at Surrey, including the Centre for Innovation and Commercialisation, the University of Surrey Seed Fund (USSF), the University’s UKRI-funded Impact Acceleration Accounts, Surrey’s network of external funding agencies, entrepreneurs, VCs, and the SETsquared partnership – a dynamic collaboration between the Universities of Surrey, Southampton, Exeter, Bristol and Bath, which was twice ranked as the Global No. 1 Business Incubator.

We are looking to appoint a highly-motivated, dynamic and organised individual with strong planning and communicating skills, who has proven experience of collaborating and networking with a range of stakeholders, in particular those from business, social enterprise or entrepreneurship sectors. This is a fixed-term (funded until 31/03/2023) 1.0 FTE role with flexibility on working pattern and hours for the right candidate. For the successful candidate, there may also be opportunities beyond this date (subject to funding), as the post-holder will be expected to contribute to building a case for support for the creation of a permanent role within the Innovation Strategy directorate going forward.
