Senior Laboratory Technician (Pathology Postmortem Room Technician) - School of Veterinary Medicine

Are you someone who is practical, enjoys working with people and loves variety? If so, we’ve a great opportunity for someone like you to join our School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey, in our state-of-the art teaching and research facilities.

The role

Based in our Veterinary Pathology Centre, you’ll become a key member of a motivated team, with the opportunity to develop your skills and career as a postmortem room technician working to support the areas of diagnostic service, teaching and research. Working with the technical services team, you’ll be responsible for helping to prepare, organise and run the Centre’s daily service activities. This will include: receiving submissions; setting up equipment; learning to perform the highly technical laboratory skills necessary to assist our pathologists as they perform diagnostic autopsies on a diverse range of animal species (mammalian, avian, and aquatic); helping veterinary students who work with the pathologists during clinical rotations in our Centre; and maintenance, disease control, and clean-up of the postmortem suite. This varied position will also include participation in the Centre’s general processing and administrative procedures, and it may involve providing technical assistance in other related areas, as needed. Overall, it brings lots of daily interaction with clients, academics, researchers, and students.

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a genuine interest in science, a practical approach to work and to problem solving, and excellent interpersonal skills. This position will suit individuals with some previous technical experience in areas such as veterinary nursing, animal handling, general laboratory environments, or butchery. However, success in this role is not limited to just individuals who have experience in any of these areas. So interested candidates with alternative backgrounds and skills are encouraged to apply or to contact any of the persons listed below to discuss their suitability. Most importantly, the ideal candidate will be a team player who is also capable of working alone when necessary, and who will follow direction and guidance. A willingness to learn new techniques and skills is the key requirement of the position, and training will be in place to support and develop the successful candidate in the role.

In addition to salary, you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement, a great pension, discount to Surrey Sports Park, childcare assistance, and excellent development opportunities.

The School of Veterinary Medicine is a truly inspirational and fascinating work environment, delivering teaching to over 750 undergraduate students who are training to be the veterinary professionals of the future. Research at the School predominantly focuses on ‘One Health, One Medicine’, to better understand the factors which impact the health of both animals and humans. With investment of over £40m, our facilities and those of the wider University present a wonderful backdrop for the right person to contribute to wider society and develop their skills and career.

If you are enthusiastic, keen to join the University, and are motivated to do things differently and to open a world of new possibilities, we would be delighted to hear from you. For an informal discussion about the role, please contact:
