Research Fellow in Stratification of Polymer Thin Films

Department of Physics

Location:  Guildford
Salary:  £31,866 to £33,797 per annum
Fixed Term
Post Type:  Full Time
Advert Placed:  Wednesday 08 January 2020
Closing Date:  Monday 10 February 2020
Interview Date:  To be confirmed
Reference:  088719

This project, which is funded by the ACS Petroleum Research Fund, will investigate the formation of thin films from mixtures of polymers having different molecular weights and chain architectures (including star polymers). The project aims to determine the conditions under which the molecules stratify with one type along the top surface. Ion beam analysis of deuterium-labelled molecules will be performed at the Surrey Ion Beam Centre to obtain concentration depth profiles. The results will be interpreted using theories of diffusiophoresis with support from modelling work within the Soft Matter Group at Surrey.

Applicant should have, or soon expect, a PhD degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or engineering, with emphasis on soft matter systems. Previous practical experience with thin film deposition and experimental methods of surface analysis (especially high vacuum techniques) would be very helpful.

Informal enquiries regarding the post may be directed to Prof. Joseph Keddie (j.keddie@surrey.ac.uk). The funding source requires that the post must begin by 1 July 2019 at the very latest.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,866) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,817).
