Background

The role & key responsibilities

The focus of the role is to provide University wide robust financial management information. This includes accurate forecasting, analysis, reporting and budgeting which will be used to inform fact based decision making that will directly impact the University’s financial sustainability.

  • Accountable for the control and co-ordination of the University’s management accounts timetable and processes.  This will include the initial level critical review and analysis of the University’s numbers, challenging Business Finance Partners and Budget Holders.
  • Accountable   for the production of the University Executive Board Management Accounts Pack and Presentation provided to Senior University Committees. Bringing new and innovative ways to present information to the CFO. When agreed, leading their implementation. Recognising the audience and tailoring the information to their needs while promoting a clear message is an essential communication skill for this role.
  • Leadthe management and co-ordination of the operational aspects of the University’s annual financial planning process. To include the management/co-ordination of the timetable and process and the initial critical review and analysis of the University numbers challenging Business Finance Partners and Budget Holders.
  • Design and implement a suite of internal management accounts reports that provide all levels of stakeholders including the CFO and Executive Board with robust, relevant information on which to make fact based decisions to support the University’s financial sustainability.
  • Ensure the management accounts function provide reliable and relevant financial reporting and analysis support to all stakeholders, working closely with Business Finance Partners to understand and agree the requirements for each area.
  • Explore, propose and lead opportunities to improve management information and processes [within the guidance provided by the CFO and other Senior Finance Colleagues], that create value and enhance information on which Executive Board and Committees can make fact based decisions.
  • Lead, motivate, train and develop the Financial Reporting team, prioritising workloads, providing leadership and conducting regular reviews.

What you’ll need to succeed

You are likely to have a degree and hold a professional qualification ACCA or similar.  With substantial experience in a similar role within public or private sector, and a strong knowledge of Excel.

It is essential you have good communication skills and experience of building effective working relationships with people at all levels of the organisation as well as communicating complex financial information to non-finance colleagues. You are expected to have the necessary gravitas to lead on financial issues and maintain the collaborative reputation of the Finance function.

You should be engaging, inquisitive, articulate, and empathetic in nature. You should have confidence in your own ability, and be skilled at planning and organising your time to ensure your work is delivered to a high standard within the required timescales.  Your approach should be enthusiastic, proactive and flexible.
